The other day I stumbled upon a photo of my best friend Alisa and me from way back in the ’80s. Here we are, big hair, lots of ruffles and plenty of flowery barrettes. That one picture took me on a little time-travel journey back to a very different era.
It was before cell phones, before texting, before GPS. If you broke down on the side of the road, you couldn’t just call someone for help. You had to figure it out. I actually remember one day when I was 16 and my car broke down in the middle of nowhere. I tried to recall how I got help and in my mind, I thought I called my dad to come rescue me. But, of course that wasn’t even possible back then. The truth is, I had to hitchhike to the nearest pay phone to reach him. Wild, right?
Even though life felt a little more inconvenient, it also felt more connected. We had to physically show up for one another. If we wanted to talk, we knocked on doors or drove across town. If we wanted to celebrate or comfort or laugh till our stomachs hurt, we met in person. Our lives were woven together by real, tangible moments; not just emojis and quick texts.
Now, of course, I’m grateful for the convenience of modern technology. But that photo reminded me of how powerful in-person energy really is. The kind of energy you can feel in a hug, in shared silence, in belly laughs over coffee, in the way someone looks you in the eyes and really sees you.
As we all move through our busy lives, let’s not forget to make space for those real moments. Call your friend and meet for a walk. Invite someone over just to sit and be. Show up. Be present. Because nothing replaces the power of a true, physical connection.
