Have you ever noticed how time slows down when you’re on the open road? There’s something magical about a road trip with family—the way the miles stretch out before you, the way laughter fills the car, and the way the world outside your window feels bigger, brighter, and full of possibility.
This past week I set out for a road trip with my husband, daughter and her boyfriend and headed to Big Bend National Park in southwest Texas. In preparation for the long drive we stocked up on snacks and downloaded an awesome playlist of our favorite songs. In addition to singing our hearts out, telling jokes, and giggling about car farts, to keep us entertained we guessed the number of McDonalds we would see along the way. It was a pleasant surprise that we only encountered 5 as we meandered our way through tiny Texas towns comprised of a maximum population ranging from 400 – 3,000 people.
We stopped for some local BBQ and got ice cream from a shop made out of the caboose of a train. We pulled over at historical markers and took pictures of the rolling landscape. We visited a ghost town and a famous grave yard. We had a surprise javelina siting by choosing to take the road less traveled. And, this is all before we even arrived at our final destination.
In our fast-paced, technology-driven lives, we often forget to simply be—to look up, to breathe deeply, and to absorb the beauty of our surroundings. A road trip is the perfect antidote. It invites us to step away from screens, to truly see the landscapes that shift with every mile, and to embrace the unknown with open hearts.
One of the most beautiful things about a road trip is the way it gently demands our presence. There’s no rush—just the hum of the tires on the pavement, the changing scenery, and the quiet moments in between. It gives us time to reconnect, to tell old stories, to sing along to favorite songs, and to simply enjoy the company of the people we love most.
Traveling—even just a few hours away—opens our minds. It reminds us that the world is vast and full of wonders waiting to be discovered. From rolling hills to bustling small towns, from quiet forests to wide-open skies, each turn of the road offers something new to admire. And in that wonder, we find gratitude.
A road trip invites us to put the phones down (except for the occasional photo, of course!) and truly engage. To talk. To listen. To be present in a way that feels rare and precious.
Even the smallest detour can lead to the best memories. Stumbling upon a hidden diner, stopping at a roadside attraction, or pulling over to watch the sunset—these unplanned moments become the stories we tell for years. A road trip teaches us to embrace spontaneity, to welcome surprises, and to find joy in the unexpected.
So, pack a bag, grab some snacks, and gather your friends and family. Hit the road with no rush, no pressure—just the promise of adventure and the joy of being together. Let the world surprise you. Let the road lead you somewhere new. And most importantly, let your heart be open to every beautiful moment along the way.
